Rakvere keskväljak
The center square of Rakvere
The area of the square is divided into different spaces by cobblestone circles. To enlighten the circles there is a large lantern hanging over each of them. The squares vary in size and morphology: two of them are concave, one forms a mound and two are plane. A large concave rock-circle functions as a fountain, a circle in the centre of the square is a mounded playing area for children. The rest of the square is covered with cubical stones of different tones constituting a gray and black lively zigzag pattern. On one side the square is adjoined by a long halyard marking the position of a perspective flanking building with preferably a public function. On the other side there is a very dynamic futuristic bus stop pavilion almost resembling an explosion. The square is designed to become the central area of the town of Rakvere, the capital of West-Virumaa county. It is a recreational space as well as the main square for parades and other large-scale events. At the moment it is also a kind of landmark for rapidly modernizing and developing small town Rakvere with its fresh-thinking town architect and open-minded mayor. The square has met both criticism and prize because it has been a quite brave leap towards a contemporary townscape.
